MABIC was established six
years ago and since its inception has been actively involved in dissemination
of information on biotechnology and carrying out outreach programmes
to enhance the level of awareness among stakeholders. MABIC has thus
far successfully collaborated with ministries, government agencies,
research institutes, state governments, public and private higher
learning institutions.
To further enhance MABIC’s
image and visibility, a relaunch was held to share MABIC’s aspiration,
ideas and strategies with stakeholders to ensure the key players understand,
appreciate and support MABIC’s role in promoting biotechnology.
During the relaunch, MABIC’s new direction and logo was unveiled.
MABIC’s vision, mission, future direction and plans were shared
with it stakeholders. This event renewed MABIC’s commitments
to promote biotechnology and provided an impetus to strive harder
in this area.
MABIC’s mission is
to provide scientifically accurate and fact-based resources to all
stakeholders, to provide a platform for issues on biotech to be discussed
and ultimately support the government’s aspiration to develop
this field. This leads to its vision to be a gateway to public understanding
of biotechnology. Producing more publications, and creating a strong
database of biotech players are some of the future plans of MABIC.
Together with the launch
of MABIC’s new direction, the event also saw the launch of ISAAA’s
Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops 2006. This is an
annual review of the status of GM crops globally and is authored by
ISAAA’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Clive James.
For the first time, this publication was launched in Malaysia.
In conjunction with the
launch, Dr. James made a presentation on “Global Commercialization
of Biotech Crops: 1996-2006”. This presentation exposed local

message that Malaysia should not be left behind in this area.
