December 2005 and January 2006, readers have been polled regarding their
views on the prospects of an academic career in biotechnology. In retrospect,
of the 75 people who responded, 52% believed in a bright future in the
industry for graduates, while 28% believed that the time has yet to arrive.
This is contrasted by the 16% who refuted this statement.
In turn, readers were then
gauged on their willingness to embark on an academic career in biotechnology.
Out of 65 polled, 39 supported the cause of pursuing a degree in biotech,
while 16 announced their reservations. 10 provided an all out negative
reply.
Similarly, when probed on their
willingness to allow their children to embark on such a career, 48% out
of 67 people polled agreed, while a 13% would not have sent their children
into this field. But it should be noted that 37% of people polled pronounced
the possibility.
Lastly, readers generally believed
that the job market for biotech graduates are growing fast enough, with
52% out of 69 who voted giving an affirmative answer. In contrast, 28%
believe that it would happen in the future and a further 16% denied the
possibility.
