Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers

As the year 2008 has just unfolded itself, we would like to wish everyone a more successful and fruitful year. Last year has been an extremely busy year for us at MABIC with many activities and we are anticipating an equally busy year, if not busier.

We truly hope all our activities were beneficial and managed to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of issues pertaining to biotechnology. A total of twelve events were organized last year including one in Pakistan, two in Sabah with Universiti Sabah Malaysia, and one in Penang with University Malaya and Asian Mycology Committee. This was part of our effort to spread our wings to places outside Klang Valley in order to reach out to a wider audience. Besides events, MABIC actively participated in various committees and discussion groups, all with an objective to create an enabling and conducive environment for research, development and commercialization.

With your usual support and encouraging words, we look forward to greater success this year. We have several plans for 2008, which are still at the planning stages and we would be pleased to announce them once they are finalized.

Dato’ Mukhriz bin Tun Mahathir and Dr. Shermal Perera from Bioven kick start the feature section for this year with their interview on drug development, clinical research, and their vision for Bioven.

All the best till we meet in the next issue.

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Malaysian Fungal Diversity

................
Since the early 20" century Malaysian fungi have been collected, studied and some 1,061 new species described. However, there is no book available that documents the rich diversity of fungi to be found in Malaysia. This volume sets out to draw attention to this diversity and to encourage others to study them.

The book is in four sections: the first deals with this history of mycology in Malaysia along with a chapter on John Corner, who described in excess of 700 species from his travels in Malaysia. The second section deals with fungal taxonomic groups that have been most intensively studied in the country. Section three covers the ecology of fungi with topics such as wood decay fungi, fungi on food and the mycotoxins they produce and aquatic fungi, all topics actively under study in Malaysia. The final section covers the exciting developments in the biotechnological application of fungi for the benefit of human kind.

The volume provides a wealth of information on Malaysian fungi which will be a useful text for university students and research scientists and highlight the great diversity of taxa to be found in. our forests, streams and on a wide range of substrata. The editors are internationally recognized mycologists with wide experience of studying fungi in Asia and in particular Malaysia. Authors of various chapters are world famous visiting mycologists and well established national scientists.
