BICnews Issue 8:
Stem Cell: Hope or Hype?

Released on 1st January 2005

S
tem cells are currently a fascination to the medical world. They truly are remarkable things. They are the supply of cells that construct our adult bodies and repair worn out, damaged and diseased tissues. These cells renew themselves and depending on the source, they have the potential to form one, many or all cell types of an organism. Scientists are now unearthing clues on how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells are used by the body to replace damaged cells in adult organisms. The research on stem cells shows promising signs on the possibility of cell based therapies to treat regenerative diseases, transplantation and to combat deadly diseases such as cancer. However, very few technologies in life sciences are without controversy. Although the technology of stem cells can have many potential benefits, it can also be used for purposes that may evoke public concern.

The objective of this issue of BICnews is to give the reader an overview of the science of stem cells, the potential benefits, the obstacles that must be overcome, the controversies and the current situation in different countries.
