Announcement

Media Workshop

Current Issues in Biosafety, Bioethics and Bio-communication

21st February, 2006
Rimba Ilmu, University of Malaya

Creating awareness and educating the members of the media on issues related to biotechnology has always been a priority area for Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC). This time MABIC is joining hands with the Centre for Biotechnology Research in Agriculture (CEBAR) in University of Malaya, and Malaysian Society for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MSMBB) to organize a workshop for the media focusing on biosafety, bioethics and bio-communication.

The topics will be addressed by speakers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), University of Malaya, Yayasan Ilmuwan, and representative from the media.

Agricultural biotechnology has been identified as one of the key areas of interest by the Government under the National Biotechnology Policy. Dealing with agbiotech, one not only has to have good knowledge on the technology but it is also equally important to be well-informed on issues related to biosafety and bioethics. Thus, it is important for the media to have good knowledge in these areas in order for them to effectively bring issues related to agbiotech into the public domain. Creating a platform for dialogue and discussion is important to overcome misperception on this technology and establish positive outcomes.
