It has been theorized that a chemotherapy treatment for an immune system disorder may work well in treating human avian influenza. Much thought has been put in by scientists at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm and Hong Kong as they believe that similarities between human infection of the H5N1 bird flu and haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis may allow the treatment to be effective against the dreaded bird flu virus.

 

Protein Sciences have announced the development of a commercially-viable cell-based method in producing influenza vaccines that may shorten the current waiting time of several months to only weeks. Currently, the vaccine, FluBlok has been on the fast lane in approval from the FDA, and is anticipated to be marketed by 2007 at latest.

 

Global guidelines proposed for stem cell studies

Researchers of the Hinxton Group, a global consortium of researchers, ethicists, scientific journal editor and lawyers, have produced a set of international guidelines with regards to stem cell research in hopes of simplifying existing rules and allowing further collaborations. The consensus were reached through a democratic process in which diverse moral considerations and implications were assessed.
