Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers

It is the time of the month again – for us to meet and share some thoughts.

A workshop for journalists was just successfully concluded in Islamabad last week. MABIC joined hands with its sister organization, PABIC, and ISAAA and COMSTECH to organize this event. Journalists from five countries – Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt and Pakistan benefited from this workshop. More events will be organized at the regional and international level in future not only for members of the media but also for other stakeholders. Thanks to our strong global network.

While in Pakistan, I had an opportunity to visit the H.E.J Research Institute of Chemistry located at University of Karachi, Karachi. This institute is certainly worth emulating and is a perfect example of a thriving research centre in a developing country. It simply shows the network between developing countries must be strengthen to facilitate capacity building and sharing of experiences.

Next month, we are organizing a workshop which will address the concept of teaching biotechnology in schools. This is carried out with the Curriculum Development Centre at the Ministry of Education with a prominent scientist from Singapore, who is not new to Malaysian audience, Dr. Koh Chong Lek.

It is our pledge to the nation that MABIC will continue to assist to bring biotechnology to the helm.

We need your support and constructive comments to do better. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Program Director

The recent increases in crude oil prices, together with concerns over global warming and its impact on the world climate, has created renewed worldwide interest in alternative energy, which is sustainable and less polluting. Biofuel is one option which has attracted global attention.

As a government entity tasked to facilitate the commercialisation of technologies, Technology Park Malaysia Corporation is putting together a forum to discuss the latest developments in biofuel technologies.
