Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers,

With the general election just over, the next question in the mind of most people is the cabinet lineup. For us, the scientific community, we are all waiting anxiously to see who takes over the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Though, I am a strong believer that science should be apolitical, the policies are drawn up by the ministry. This is acceptable. However, the ministry should have good understanding of the issues at the ground as well. What are the scientists looking for, what are the constraints they face, what stifles commercialization, FDIs, and industry development? The focus or the priority areas should be identified carefully based on due diligence studies so that we do not end up barking the wrong tree.

There has been much emphasis on research based on innovation and commercialization lately. At the same time there are strong sentiments such as anti-monopolization by big multinational companies, and the need for home grown technology. We must realize these two aspects are contradictory to a certain extent. Without basic and fundamental research, we will neither be able to take full ownership of a product nor be independent of MNCs. Our very own strengths as well as indigenous problems require us to be involved heavily in fundamental research. For an example, basic research can thrive based on our rich biodiversity which is our strength. Whereas, tropical diseases that plague us such as dengue and malaria too demands much basic research. Our dream is to create at least one Nobel Laureate by 2020 and for this we must realize that thus far, there has been no Noble prize given to commercialization. There is simply no short cut to success. The Syngentas, Monsantos, Pfizers and the likes of these companies were not created overnight.

What is equally important is for science related ministries to work together with one aspiration. The route taken by each ministry might differ but the destination should be the same. We must admit that we have excellent policies and now what matters is the implementation and execution.

MABIC pledges its full support to work with the government to see the biotechnology sector is developed as outlined in the National Biotechnology Policy.

Enjoy this issue!

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director
