Commercialisation
of Agricultural Biotechnology Crops in Asia
Moving from Ideas to Useful
Products
Date: 5th - 7th May 2008
Venue: Le Meridien, Kuala Lumpur
The National Biotechnology
Policy envisions that biotechnology will be the
new economic engine for Malaysia. Under the new
roadmap for biotechnology, emphasis is now shifted
to agricultural, healthcare and industrial biotechnology.
These areas have been identified based on Malaysia’s
leading position in plant commodities and the
abundance of natural resources which could be
utilized in the healthcare sector. It is targeted
that by 2020, this sector would create 280,000
jobs and make a 5% contribution to Malaysia’s
Gross Domestic Product. A significant portfolio
of R&D projects is currently being undertaken
but much of these will remain only as research
results until they are taken to the next stage
of development into products.
This 3-day training programme
will provide a comprehensive, in-depth understanding
of the principles, approach, regulatory requirements,
information needs, awareness-building techniques,
and stewardship requirements for commercializing
a biotechnology seed product for widespread farmer
adoption and also an understanding of all aspects
of the regulatory requirements for biosafety and
food/feed safety and the requisite risk assessments
This training programme is presented
by Professor Paul S. Teng who
is the Dean for Graduate Programs & Research,
National Institute of Education at the Nanyang
Technological University, Singapore and Dr.
Andrew Powell, the CEO of Asia BioBusiness.
