Message from the Director

Dear Valued Members

Those who want to meet the leading fashion designers in Malaysia should block these dates 18-26 Sept. Expect to meet Keith Kee, Karl Ng, Shegar Chandran, Rahman Saif and Karen Liew at Biotech Carnival at the National Science Centre, Kuala Lumpur. What more… the creation of these fashion icons will be paraded by Miss Universe Malaysia 2009, Joannabelle Ng and first runner up Miss World Malaysia, Stephanie Chua. All designs will be based on biotech motifs.

MABIC is taking the path less travelled in communicating biotechnology. Science is often perceived to be boring unless it is presented in an innovative manner that can capture the attention of the public. Learning science in classrooms is far less effective than learning it from TV programmes, shows and cartoons. The Biotech Carnival will be an initiative towards engaging all sectors of population in biotechnology. Thanks to the support from BiotechCorp and National Science Centre, we are expecting a grand event with debates, colouring, writing, and drawing competitions, quizzes, spelling bees, games, talks, demonstrations of DNA extraction, and many more attractions, prizes and goodies. We will be happy to update everyone on the latest developments on this carnival from time to time.

MABIC is organizing three workshops for teachers next month with a resource person from Victoria AgriBiosciences Centre, Melbourne. The workshops will be hosted by Universiti Sarawak Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, and Melaka Biotechnology Institute (MIB). The Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Hj Mohd ali bin Mohd Rustam will officially launch the workshop at MIB. The workshop will feature experiments on DNA extraction, fingerprinting, PCR and bioinformatics with an aim to enhance pedagogy among science teachers.

With more updates in the next issue..

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director
