Message from the Director

Dear valued subscribers

Greetings from MABIC! It feels good to meet you again in another issue of BiCalert. This year has been very exciting so far and we hope to be in the same high spirit for the rest of the year.

I am glad to announce that we have added a new section to our website – MABIC Visits. I had a number of opportunities so far to visit some prominent biotechnology players outside Malaysia and I thought it would be good to share my experiences and thoughts with everyone, hence, this new addition to our website. The visits that are featured are Agricultural Genetic Engineering Research Institute (AGERI) in Giza, Egypt; The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, USA; Monsanto Company in St. Louis, USA; BIOTEC in Pathumthani, Thailand and some farms in Weslaco, Texas. We hope you enjoy this addition.

I also would like to bring your attention to the International Symposium on Molecular Farming in Plants that MABIC is co-organizing with the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR), University Malaya and other partners which will be held on the 13-15 June 2006. Announcement

International Symposium on Molecular Farming in Plants: "Prospects for the Asia Pacific"

13th – 15th June 2006
Boulevard Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

This international symposium is organized by University Malaya, Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR), Malaysian Society for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MSMBB) in collaboration with MABIC and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The purpose of this symposium is to promote the exchange of knowledge, ideas and information on the newest developments and applied technologies in the field of molecular farming which encompasses the production of pharmaceuticals and technical proteins in plants. The symposium includes sessions on molecular and cellular technologies, novel products, production, purification and downstream processing, regulatory, safety and ethical issues, and business model for commercialization.

Researchers from universities, research institutes, industry representatives, and students will benefit from this symposium.
