Message from the Director

Dear Valued Members,

Greetings from Bonn! This message is sent to you while attending the COP-MOP4 meeting in Bonn, in the midst of listening to all the debates and discussion on GMOs. This meeting in fact, reflects the importance of public awareness and understanding of issues related to GMOs. What is disheartening is that often we hear the risks of GM technology taken into serious consideration when debating the use of the technology, neglecting entirely the potential and benefits. The opportunity loss is never considered, as well as the cost of regulations. The mind set and perception of the public is shaped by the information they receive, hence the importance of science-based information and not based on emotions and sentiment. With the current global food crisis, we need to be pragmatic. Risk and benefit analysis is important before making any decisions.

At MABIC we are going through an exciting time with many projects in the pipeline besides our usual seminars and workshops. Bear with us and we will announce these projects, slated to be the first of its kind in Malaysia when they are ready for launch.

Once again, I would like to invite papers for our new journal – Biotech Frontier. For more information on the journal, click
here.
Till we meet in the next issue, the best from MABIC.

Sincerely
,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director
