| For
this month’s edition of the MABIC newsletter, readers were queried
regarding their understanding of pharmacogenetics. 80% of readers had
encountered the term pharmacogenetics before whereas it was something
new for 20% of the readers polled.
Out of 48 readers
questioned, an overwhelming 41 believed that biotechnology had the potential
of revolutionising the medical scene, while a five maintained a wait-and-see
attitude. Of the readers polled, 82% believed that pharmacogenetics would
be fully advanced, in contrast to the 5% who gave an all out negative
response and the 13% who maintained reservation.
Another area
of concern was the focus of minority groups, as 65% believed that there
is potential for neglect due to lower profit margins of minority groups,
with 22% voicing the possibility and 14% believed the opposite.
In general,
readers polled were supportive of pharmacogenetics, with 37 out of the
40 polled giving unequivocal support to the field, while a minority of
three polled did not support the advancement of pharmacogenetics.
