Message from the Director

Dear Valued Members,

Greetings from San Diego, the venue for BIO 2008. It is great pleasure to meet many familiar and new faces, renew old ties and forge new ones. A strong Malaysian delegation headed by the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation is comprised of government officials, industry, scientists, academia, and the media. MABIC wishes all Malaysian companies and scientists success in forging collaboration, partnerships, and business ventures.

All the efforts put into participating at BIO 2008 will be futile if we do not create an enabling environment for local companies to thrive, for foreign companies to reach our shores, and for our pool of human capital to enlarge. For that we need excellent regulatory framework, education system, allocation for R&D, and the most important factor – vision and perseverance. Looking at the enthusiasm shared by the other countries does send a shiver down the spine – will Malaysia be left behind? We have to ensure this will never happen.

Check out MABIC events on our event calendar. Busy months ahead!

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Announcement

Science Public Seminar: Business of Bio-Innovation

4th July 2008 (Friday)
Plenary Theatre, Monash University Malaysia, Sunway Campus

Business of biology, has been practiced since time immemorial. Compared to other knowledge-based industries like electronics and information technology, the life science innovation and product development cycle has generally taken substantially longer, costlier and with higher risk. More focus being placed on intellectual property generation and management as a basis for assessing expected future value through the development of a pipeline of a new products, services, and technologies. One way to overcome this hurdle or speed up the market entry is to re-think activities that are currently practiced by conventional bio-business.

This seminar talk will be presented by Dr. Lee Chee Wee, Assoc. Prof., Department of Physiology, National University of Singapore and the Founder & CEO of Lynk Biotechnologies Pte Ltd, Singapore. His talk will illustrate how Lynk Biotechnologies (a drug discovery company spin-off from NUS) was able to overcome the challenges and difficulties that is faced by many regional biotech start-ups.
