Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers

Greetings from MABIC! It was great meeting many of you at the Asia Pacific Conference on Plant Tissue Culture and Agribiotechnology 2007. The conference was a success with a large number of participants and renowned speakers from around the globe. It created a platform for sharing knowledge and experience, and discussing current issues on biotechnology. This is one of MABIC’s objectives – creating a platform for biotech players to discuss and debate issues. MABIC was proud to be part of this important conference.

Later this month, MABIC is jointly organizing science communication workshops for journalists and scientists in Sabah with the Biotechnology Research Institute, Universiti Sabah Malaysia. We are expecting very lively and interactive workshops, facilitated by professional science communicators from Australia.

Next on our agenda is Conference on Modern Biotechnology scheduled for 13-14 August, jointly organized by Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation. The conference aims to disseminate clear and accurate science-based information to all stakeholders on biosafety regulations. We look forward to seeing you at this conference.

Check out the latest information on Biotech Frontier – the biotech journal for OIC countries. We welcome papers for the inaugural issue.

Talk to you again in the next issue!

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Announcement

Conference on Modern Biotechnology

13 - 14 August 2007

Hilton Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia

The legislative and regulatory framework which is the 7th Thrust of the National Biotechnology Policy is a key factor that will help determine the direction and development of biotechnology in the country. Regulation is of utmost importance to any new technology and a good regulatory system enhances public confidence in the products and services produced. However, while acknowledging this fact, we must also strive for a robust and flexible regulatory framework that would facilitate biotechnology research and industry growth at the same time safeguarding human and animal health as well as the environment.

Biosafety has been a very contentious and controversial issue. In order to come to any consensus, this issue must be tackled in a very transparent and scientific manner. Those who have a stake in this area come from a varied background – scientists, regulators, industries, policy makers, environmentalists, consumers, NGOs, and lawyers among others. This diversity adds to the complexity to the communication and discussion on this subject.

This conference is jointly organised by Malaysian Biotechnology Corp. and MABIC with the support from ASM and MBIO.
