Message from the Director

Dear Valued members

Greetings from MABIC! We hope the companies that were part of the Malaysian delegation to BIO San Diego came back with lots of good news, promising joint ventures, collaborations, and business deals. It is also heartening to hear that the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation has indicated his interest to relook the Biosafety Act to make it more industry friendly. This is certainly a priority to ensure we place Malaysia in the global biotech radar.

A look at our event calendar will tell you how busy we are at MABIC and our commitments to spur the nation's biotech agenda. Now, we have taken another step forward to realise our vision of being ‘The gateway to public understanding of biotechnology'. MABIC is now blogging! Check out our blog at malaysia4Biotech.blogspot.com. We welcome your comments, suggestions and input. Expect more food for thoughts on biotech on our blog. We trust this is the first active blog on biotech in Malaysia.

We also would like to draw your attention to the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show 2008, which will be held from 11-23 Aug 2008. For more information, please visit: mahaexpo.

We trust we will be meeting many of you in the coming months in our events. Looking forward to catching up with all of you.

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

GM Technologies:
Addressing Global Sustainability Needs and Challenges

18 to 19 August 2008
Palace of Golden Horses, KL

Genetic Modification (GM) Technologies offer a myriad of sustainable development solutions. These effective and efficient technologies facilitate sustainable development because of their ability to replace non-renewable resources with renewable ones through the wider use of biological organisms and mechanisms. However, the adoption rate of these technologies by developing countries lags behind the developed world, possibly due to the lack of awareness of its applications or because of the overly cautious approach in the adoption of these new technologies.

This conference is organized by the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation Malaysia with the support of Malaysian Agricultural Research & Development Institute (MARDI), Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC), and Malaysian Bio Industry Organization (MBIO) to address these issues and to ensure the Malaysian populace is well aware of the potential and solutions offered by GM technologies.
