Message from the Director

Dear valued members,

Greetings from MABIC!

The Conference on “GM Technologies: Addressing Global Sustainability Needs and Challenges” and the “Expert Consultation on Agricultural Biotechnology for Promoting Food Security in Developing Countries” were real success. Both events saw the convergence of experts in agricultural biotechnology and relevant fields. It was a great opportunity for local stakeholders to deliberate on issues related to GM technology, and share information and experiences with the guest speakers.

The recently announced Budget 2009 lacked the initial spirit and commitment of the government to develop the biotech industry. In the wake of global food crisis, modern biotechnology should be nurtured, especially in Malaysia where our biotech industry, and research, development and commercialization still have a far way to go to catch up with the more developed countries. We hope the plans outlined in the National Biotechnology Policy will materialize.

On a more encouraging note, the recognition of University Science Malaysia as an APEX university is hoped to pave way for the university to become ranked among top universities in the world. However, though the vision seems to be good, its implementation should be followed through until the initial objectives are met.

MABIC blog (Malaysia4biotech@blogspot.com) is receiving very encouraging stream of visitors every day. It has been linked to many websites and we are continuously receiving feedbacks and comments. It is heartening to realise the goals of starting the blog is being achieved. It is reaching to the general public and enhancing their awareness of biotechnology.

Till we meet again in the next issue, SELAMAT HARI RAYA to all Muslims.

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Announcement

BIODIVERSITY & BIOTECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM 2008

19th - 21st November 2008

Crowne Plaze Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak

Biodiversity today is the result of 3.5 billions of years of evolution and existence. Its intrinsic value is important for a variety of reasons from healthcare to food production. The loss of biodiversity is significant, prompting the global call for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biological resources particularly in countries which are rich in biodiversity.

Malaysia is one of the 12 mega-diverse countries in the world. Together they account for 60-70 per cent of the world's biodiversity. Biodiversity contributes to the genetic and chemical diversity that support research and development (R&D) in biotechnology.

Biotechnology has been proven to be a powerful tool for building knowledge, unraveling discoveries and creation of new and better applications. It has developed into a major industry that is set to be the catalyst for next wave of economic development.

Malaysia's biotechnology ambition is well supported by the government raising biotech research and industry to the top of the political and economic agenda of the country. There is ample funding to promote commercialization of biotech and fostering of faborable environment for the development of the industry. However, achieving the goals and success is not without its challenges and issues; from the need to address legal framework for access to biological resources, equitable shraing of benefits, capable workforce and expertise to getting the right strategies for R&D.
