Message from the Director

Dear valued members,

Greetings from MABIC!

It was great meeting many of you at BioMalaysia 2008. It was heartening to hear the fresh commitments from the Prime Minister to develop biotechnology, especially the stress on the regulatory regime. MABIC is a proud partner and we will continue to support BioMalaysia and gear it to be a premier biotech event. BioMalaysia is a platform where old ties can be renewed and new ties forged and we hope it served this purpose to facilitate collaboration and joint ventures. MABIC is strong advocate of private-public and public-public collaborations and only through working together, we can strengthen research and development, and expedite commercialization.

MABIC blog is continuously receiving visitors and comments, some directly sent to us. We are overwhelmed by the responses we get and the number of websites that have linked our blog. This initiative is truly achieving its purpose of reaching out to the masses. Click here to visit our blog: (Malaysia4biotech@blogspot.com)

We are currently working on database that will have profiles of all life science scientists in Malaysia which will serve as a platform for discussion, collaboration, sharing of knowledge. We hope to announce more details soon.

MABIC wishes all Hindu members “HAPPY DEEPAVALI?/strong>.

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Announcement

BIODIVERSITY & BIOTECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM 2008

19th - 21st November 2008

Hilton, Kuching, Sarawak

Biodiversity today is the result of 3.5 billions of years of evolution and existence. Its intrinsic value is important for a variety of reasons from healthcare to food production. The loss of biodiversity is significant, prompting the global call for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biological resources particularly in countries which are rich in biodiversity.

Malaysia is one of the 12 mega-diverse countries in the world. Together they account for 60-70 per cent of the world's biodiversity. Biodiversity contributes to the genetic and chemical diversity that support research and development (R&D) in biotechnology.

Biotechnology has been proven to be a powerful tool for building knowledge, unraveling discoveries and creation of new and better applications. It has developed into a major industry that is set to be the catalyst for next wave of economic development.

Malaysia's biotechnology ambition is well supported by the government raising biotech research and industry to the top of the political and economic agenda of the country. There is ample funding to promote commercialization of biotech and fostering of faborable environment for the development of the industry. However, achieving the goals and success is not without its challenges and issues; from the need to address legal framework for access to biological resources, equitable shraing of benefits, capable workforce and expertise to getting the right strategies for R&D.
