A media workshop by MABIC is scheduled
to be held in December, 2005 in collaboration with
Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF).
As all previous media workshop, it is geared towards
assisting journalists and broadcasters in understanding
the latest developments in biotechnology. This workshop
will focus on the role of biotechnology in cancer
research. It is a timely topic as Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has pledged his
support towards cancer research. Besides highlighting
the role of biotechnology in cancer research, the
workshop will also highlight the various research
activities that are ongoing in this field.
Recent advances in biotechnology
have given great impetus to many areas in the field
of medical in particular cancer research. Research
on cancer is a priority area in medical biotechnology
as it is the most dreaded disease that notoriously
has become one of the major killer diseases in the
world. The recent Malaysian Biotechnology Policy
has also identified medical biotechnology as one
of the key areas of interest.
It is important for the media to
have good knowledge in this area in order for them
to effectively bring issues related to healthcare
and biotechnology into the public domain. Creating
a platform for dialogue and discussion is important
to increase public awareness and tackle issues and
concerns pertaining to biotechnology in the medical
world.
