Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers,

The festivities are over and it must have been a good break for everyone. We hope everyone is back to work more energized. As for MABIC, we have just successfully organized a workshop in Kota Bahru in collaboration with the Kelantan State Government on the 14th November. The workshop was aimed at giving a good exposure to state policy makers in terms of the potential of biotechnology, the areas of priorities, the opportunities as well as the challenges. It was our pleasure to have the Deputy Chief Minister of Kelantan, YB. Tuan Hj. Ahmad B. Hj. Yaacob on behalf of YAB Tuan Guru Dato' Hj Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat to officiate the workshop.

We are also working on a media workshop that will be held in December focusing on cancer research. This will be done with the partnership of Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF). It is hoped that this workshop will create an awareness among the journalists on the role of biotechnology in cancer research.

Together let’s make biotechnology a success in Malaysia.

Announcement

Media Workshop

A media workshop by MABIC is scheduled to be held in December, 2005 in collaboration with Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF). As all previous media workshop, it is geared towards assisting journalists and broadcasters in understanding the latest developments in biotechnology. This workshop will focus on the role of biotechnology in cancer research. It is a timely topic as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has pledged his support towards cancer research. Besides highlighting the role of biotechnology in cancer research, the workshop will also highlight the various research activities that are ongoing in this field.

Recent advances in biotechnology have given great impetus to many areas in the field of medical in particular cancer research. Research on cancer is a priority area in medical biotechnology as it is the most dreaded disease that notoriously has become one of the major killer diseases in the world. The recent Malaysian Biotechnology Policy has also identified medical biotechnology as one of the key areas of interest.

It is important for the media to have good knowledge in this area in order for them to effectively bring issues related to healthcare and biotechnology into the public domain. Creating a platform for dialogue and discussion is important to increase public awareness and tackle issues and concerns pertaining to biotechnology in the medical world.

Date: December, 2005 (Date to be finalized)

Time: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm

Venue: CARIF, Subang Jaya

Participants: Journalists and broadcasters
