The recent announcment of the Budget 2006, industry players have seen measures taken to bring a great push for the biotechnology and agriculture sectors. The monthly poll conducted by MABIC this month, looks into the views and opinions of readers on the subject.

Of the 55 readers who responded, 34 believed that the Budget 2006 was pro-biotech, while 12 voted a resounding no. Whereas nine readers did not know whether the Budget was beneficial to the industry in general.

In contrast, out of 62 who voted, 72% expressed optimism that the National Biotechnology Policy coupled with the Budget may help develop the fledging sector. On the other hand, 23% of readers expressed reservations on such an assumption.

Lastly, readers were divided when it comes to placing the role of responsibility in developing biotechnology. Votes were divided between the Government (41%), Investors (23%) and Venture Capitalists (17%). While a meager 13% believed it was the responsibility of the industry and 7% believed that scientists should play a major role.

In general, readers are optimistic of the effects of the recent measures being passed by the Government.
