Message from the Director

Dear Valued Subscribers

Greetings from MABIC! As promised in the last issue of BiCalert, our events for the coming month have been confirmed and posted on our event calendar. Through these events, we strive to create a platform for stakeholders to meet and discuss issues and concerns related to biotechnology as well as to disseminate science-based information to everyone. We hope these programmes will effectively enhance public awareness on biotechnology and raise the acceptance level of this beneficial technology.

However, MABIC too appreciates the common concerns of the public on biotechnology and strongly believes aspects of human and animal safety, environmental impact, and principles of ethics and religion have to be considered in promoting and accepting this emerging technology.

A public seminar with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) will be organized in conjunction with MAHA 2006 and we cordially invite everyone to attend. Click here for more information on this seminar.

For the other events, please check out our monthly event calendar.

We are also busy strengthening our strategies in order to serve as an effective information centre. We hope MABIC will emerge even stronger in the near future and support the government’s agenda in promoting biotechnology.

We welcome suggestions and comments as usual. So feel free to write to us.

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Program Director

Communication Workshops

The media is one of the most influential sources of information on science and technology to lay audiences. Both positive and negative media coverage on a particular technology plays a very crucial role in public acceptance.

As part of MABIC’s continuing efforts in engaging journalists in communication workshops, we are organizing two communication workshops. Click on the titles below for more information.

1) Media Workshop: Is Science Communication more than Journalism?

Venue: Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM)

Date: 28 November 2006

2) Biotechnology Workshop: Effective Communication in Biotechnology

Venue: Penang, Malaysia
