US researchers have announced on Wednesday that they have successfully sequenced the DNA of 15 common mouse strains used for biomedical research. The breakthrough, will allow researchers to better understand the complex genetic traits of organisms from the wealth of data that has been obtained. Bacteria have been taken to task in manufacturing a new suite of potential anti-cancer drugs which may be too difficult to create synthetically. Antibiotics which have been used to target and kill cancer cells have been known to be too structurally complex to be synthetically produced. However, the bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor is known to naturally produce this family of antibiotics, and are currently being examined by researchers at University of Warwick for its potential use.

 

Stem Cells Can Mend The Heart After Attack

A new procedure being pioneered by British doctors have been noted to being new hope to heart attack patients as they will be injected with their own stem cells to repair damaged heart muscles. The low-cost treatment, involves the extraction of stem cells form a patient’s bone marrow is being hailed as a possible “cure” for the ailment, and could be given within a few hours of a heart attack. The procedure is intended to stop patients suffering further attacks and developing heart failure, something which existing treatments have failed to achieve in many cases.
