Message from the Director

Dear Members

Greetings from Wellington, New Zealand! The 10th International Symposium on the Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms is going on here focusing on past achievements and future challenges of GM research. Prominent scientists are speaking on various research areas and mounting evidence are presented on the safety of this technology to the environment, human and animal. There is no doubt that products of this technology are vigorously tested before approval. Yet, scaremongers have not rested and are still paranoid about the safety of GMOs.

It is our hope that things will change back in Malaysia for the good of the country and MABIC will continue to educate the public on the safety of modern biotechnology and the need for it to improve the quality of our lives. Malaysia should capitalize on the growing demand for bio-based products for food, feed, fiber, industrial materials and drugs. There is huge market for these in Asia and with such a forward looking biotechnology policy, our only option is to be one of the leaders in the region.

With the New Year approaching soon, we believe everyone is busy planning for the coming year and we hope developing biotechnology is one of your top priorities.

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan

Executive Director

Announcement

Malaysia Mushroom Conference & Foray (MMCF 2008)

29 November 2008

Faculty Science ,University of Malaya and the Nature Trail at Malaysian Nature Society, KL

In Malaysia, the mushroom industry is still in its infancy. To spearhead its development, concerted efforts from government, researchers, growers and public have to be mobilized and channeled towards enhancing its growth. Blessed with an abundance of agricultural residues, wild strains of edible and medicinal mushrooms and all year round suitable weather conditions, Malaysia is richly endowed with numerous opportunities to develop its vast potentials in this agribusiness.

In recognition of its importance and the problems that may hinder its smooth industrial growth, it is timely that we organize this conference, foray and exhibition to contribute to the development of the industry in the country. The conference will provide a platform for all interested parties to meet the world renowned experts, have discussions on various aspects of mushroom industry and exchange ideas or experiences. The speakers' expertise will definitely enlighten us on the right path to forge ahead in realising a viable mushroom industry in Malaysia.

We invite all of you to participate in this meeting which will provide the platform for discussions among the various parties involved - researchers, growers and product developers - to tap the potentials of mushroom cultivation as well as the downstream processing for mushroom based products as promising business opportunities. We hope that this conference will be a sharing and learning experience that will lead to fruitful collaborations so that we can meet the challenges of Research, Development and Innovation for a vibrant mushroom industry in Malaysia in the coming years.
