Message from the Director

Dear Valued Members

Greetings from Buenos Aires! I am attending the 11th International Symposium on the Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms (ISBGMO). The theme this year is “The role of biosafety research in the decision making process”. Scientists from around the world are here sharing their research outcomes on biosafety research. After 15 years of commercialization of GM crops and with no single untoward incident, GM crops have proven to be a time tested technology. We can only hope that these accumulated safety data will ease the regulatory process a little.

We just concluded the MyBio Carnival 2010 for the Northern Region at AIMST University. The flood in the Northern region forced us to move the venue from the National Science Centre, Gunung Keriang to AIMST University. But it did not change the mood of the carnival. In spite of the absence of schools, the undergraduates of AIMST University came in full force to learn about biotechnology. A number of talks and activities were organized for them. A private school participated where primary schools students enjoyed the DNA extraction session and some of the talks which demystified biotechnology.

Our next activity will take place at University Malaya where renowned scientists will talk about the developments of GM crops in Africa and also on the regulatory framework and experience in communicating biotechnology. Don’t miss this seminar. Check here for more details.

Then we are off to Penang for the “International Workshop for Islamic Scholars: Agribiotechnology: Shariah Compliance”. We managed secure an impressive lineup of speakers and delegates. This workshop is for invited delegates only.

That concludes the activities for 2010. More to come next year!

Meet you in the next issue.

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director
