Message from the Director

Dear valued members?

It is time again to welcome the new year and set new resolutions. But what is more important than setting new resolutions is reflecting back on our previous achievements, shortcomings and failures. Malaysia, as a nation has big ambition to become a global biotech player and this aspiration is shared by many of our local companies. Where are we in achieving this mission? What are the challenges? Have we identified where we have gone wrong? It is particularly important to realise our mistakes, as this will help us find a remedy to overcome the failures and get better in the future.

Some of the main challenges in the biotech industry is the lack of human capital; establishment of various regulatory regime such as biosafety, IP, plant variety, GLP, GCP, etc; the funding mechanism for the industry; level of commercialization at universities and research institutes; and lack of private-public collaborations. These areas need urgent attention from the relevant stakeholders.

MABIC will continue to support the development of biotechnology in Malaysia through its activities to see the nation¡¯s dream come true.

MABIC wishes everyone MERRY CHRISTMAS and A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Yours sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan

Announcement

Biologics Course

14-16 January 2009

Kompleks EUREKA, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang

INTRODUCTION
The present growth in the biologics industry is due to the demand for new therapeutic entities for the treatment of a variety of diseases including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory diseases and many other indications. This growth is occurring at a time when the rate of registration for new pharmaceutical drug entities is decreasing. Significant opportunities are arising in the biologics industry, particularly with the expiry of a number of patents for biologics, which opens the door for the production of follow on biologics or biosimilars.

Participants can expect a thorough, in-depth analysis of biologics, ranging from an initial overview of the industry, commercialisation issues, coverage of the enabling technologies, through to details of classes of biologics and production systems, process economics and the code of Good Manufacturing Processes.

OBJECTIVE
- To enhance the knowledge of participants in these areas.
- To provide refresher and up-skilling modules to enable participants to grasp the many facets of biologics and their production.
