Message from the Director

Dear Valued Members

It is almost time to say goodbye to 2010 and welcome 2011. Looking back, 2010 was really a very productive and rewarding year for MABIC. We celebrated MABIC’s 10th anniversary by creating a milestone – the BioRunway! We made fashion designers and students learn biotech and incorporate it into their creations. And we ended up with fashion designers who have made biotech part and parcel of their daily working life. Look out for more of this next year where fashion and biotech will sizzle in a more glamorous event. Talks are ongoing towards this initiative.

Year 2010 also saw the 1st National Interschool and Intervarsity Biotechnology Debate, BioQuiz and BioSpelling competitions. This will be carried out annually with the cooperation of BiotechCorp and the Ministry of Education.

Another milestone was an International Workshop for Islamic Scholars which just concluded two weeks ago in Penang, jointly organized by the International Halal Integrity Alliance (IHIA). This workshop saw the deliberation between ulamas and scientists on the halal status of GM crops and foods and the adoption of a resolution. Check here for the full report.

We are now currently working on another milestone project to bring biotechnology to the masses. This project will be unveiled soon.

It is indeed rewarding and satisfying to work on the creation of a biotech-literate society.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sincerely

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director
