Message from the Director

Greetings from MABIC!

We are pleased to bring to your attention two important events this month. BiotechCorp, MABIC, MARDI, UPM, Academy of Sciences, and MBIO are jointly organizing a conference entitled “GM Technologies: Addressing Global Sustainability Needs and Challenges”, which will be held from 18-19 August. Expect to listen to excellent presentations from prominent speakers around the world on how GM technology can help combat the current global crisis on food security and other challenges. Click here for more information.

The other event is the annual Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show 2008 ( MAHA 2008 ) which is from 11-23 Aug. Don't miss the opportunity to see how agriculture transforms into lucrative business.

MABIC's blog: http://malaysia4biotech.blogspot.com is receiving a good stream of visitors since the first posting on 4 th July and has been linked to a number of foreign websites and blogs. We hope it will serve as platform for people from all walks of life to understand biotechnology and the industry.

Up to the end of August, MABIC would have organized 11 events and this is a record for MABIC. We have a few more events in the pipeline before year-end. Besides events, there are a number of projects that will be carried out to further assist in the development of biotechnology in the country. These will be announced when the projects are ready for launching.

I trust we will be meeting many of you in the next couple of months with many biotech events taking place. Keep charged!

Sincerely,

Mahaletchumy Arujanan
Executive Director

Announcement

BIODIVERSITY & BIOTECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM 2008

19th - 21st November 2008

Crowne Plaze Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak

Biodiversity today is the result of 3.5 billions of years of evolution and existence. Its intrinsic value is important for a variety of reasons from healthcare to food production. The loss of biodiversity is significant, prompting the global call for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biological resources particularly in countries which are rich in biodiversity.

Malaysia is one of the 12 mega-diverse countries in the world. Together they account for 60-70 per cent of the world's biodiversity. Biodiversity contributes to the genetic and chemical diversity that support research and development (R&D) in biotechnology.

Biotechnology has been proven to be a powerful tool for building knowledge, unraveling discoveries and creation of new and better applications. It has developed into a major industry that is set to be the catalyst for next wave of economic development.

Malaysia's biotechnology ambition is well supported by the government raising biotech research and industry to the top of the political and economic agenda of the country. There is ample funding to promote commercialization of biotech and fostering of faborable environment for the development of the industry. However, achieving the goals and success is not without its challenges and issues; from the need to address legal framework for access to biological resources, equitable shraing of benefits, capable workforce and expertise to getting the right strategies for R&D.
